On April 23rd 2009, Yahoo announced that it will close down GeoCities in October this year. And its telling its users to use Yahoo’s fee-based hosting instead: http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/webhosting/. New users cannot register on it but existing ones can continue with their sites until end of this year.. huh! Started in 2005, GeoCities was the fifth most popular website in 1997 and had 11.5 million unique hits in March this year. [Source: Wikipedia]

Now, I remember, first hearing about GeoCities and the free web hosting they provided. It was way back in the year 2000.  And everyone was excited about hosting a website on it. And well, I did. Getting a free experience of making a website in those days was totally different. You could make up only a single page with your bio-data on it and you were quite happy with it. Now, I’m getting their mail today, to switch my website to their small-business hosting. WTF!!!

I am just thinking, how many new users and little kids who want to explore things are being denied this liberty by Yahoo for their own selfish needs. They just want to popularise their paid web hosting services.

And after the thing that Yahoo had with Microsoft, I think they should actually take a look into open source stuff. And the philosophies related. They should take tips from Google, on how to go about being open source supporters and experimenting with stuff and still growing like anything. Don’t know, what will be next, paid YMail??
