Are you a Geek?
Posted by: harsh in Harsh, geek, viewpoint, tags: geek, harsh vachhani, traitsI have been around all kinds of people from travelers, hitchhikers, masqueraders, organizers, nerds, players, educators and the geeks.
After meeting a lot of people who are geeks, i have found most common traits in them.
Disclaimer : This refer to a general class of geeks , and is not derived just from anyone in specific.
Here is my observation on ‘geeks’…
1. Usually wear clothes right out of dryer (that is if they get time to wash them)
2. Drool over apple Notebooks, gaming consoles and latest gadgets
3. Have half clad women as wallpaper/screensaver (I censored this one :D)
4. Talk… talk… talk… when they find a good listener who understand their language, or are frighteningly quiet
5. Very forgetful, their brains don’t register information with priority less than one, Duh!!! registry bug.
6. Keeps away from anything which spells ‘management’
7. Talks philosophy, and look forlorn when doing so.
8. Mostly atheist and considers work their religion.
9. Mostly live alone away from parents, and their best friends always turn out to be their spouse.
10. They attend Linux User Groups and Tech Conferences.
11. Their schedule is always tentative and timing always late.
12. Semi-AntiSocial
- inability to wave at a frnd in a crowded place
- inability to approach any unknown person and start a conversation
- Lost in their own thoughts
- Prefer Social networking and blogging sites for social interactions
And I have always found myself attracted to girls that are geeks.
P.S.: are mostly entrepreneurs… when they join a big MNC, they will compromise on one or more of their ideals… and hence then cannot be labeled ‘hardcore geeks’.

#3: You cant do that if you live with parents.. :p
#6: management guys are just lame…they do it because their parents told them to. And what they do there, can be learnt by some experience and theres no use wasting 2 yrs for that, instead get yourself into the industry and learn it hands on!
#9: You should ask a geek if he wants to get married? And well, his list of girl-friends (not online gf’s :p)… I think answer should be common to each of them, except for some different breeds of geeks….who just give it up when it comes to girls (and follow their parent’s decision). lol
#12: sometimes its like…a friend sees you and you just dont remember him because he doesnt come online or doesnt have an FB/LinkedIn profile…btw, a geek can surely talk to a stranger if he listens some geeky words like: linux, open source, kernel, new technology on the block, gaming consoles (and the things u mentioned above).. its generally quite easy for a geek to find someone his kind…some kinda call or something (like mating call in animals).
very well written post otherwise… :D
and where have you been…heard a lot about you. :)
# 4. Who knows better than me!!??
# 5. LOL!!!!
# 6. NITIN??
# 8. Nice ;-)
# 9. Don’t know! Still to figure…
#12. I disagree!!
Which man in right frame of mind doesn’t drool over scantily clad ladies ,, ??? geek or no geek??
#1 who need to was clothes when you have “the greatest invention of univserse ” Denim jeans :D
#2 can i marry a Apple Mac OS x?
#10 it’s me me me and ME ;)
@Chiky : Management is necessary and will often decide the success of your project. Linus is arguably called the best manager in the world. I do not say you can learn that from books and taking up management courses. Ironically, if I am not wrong, all presidents of US except George Bush did not have a management degree.
On points 3,9 and 12 : true and lol
I had been around teaching/mentoring for my management, but i guess keeping away from them now, and pursuing my interests.:)
@Sachi : The 12th point comes in general category. Geeks are also unique in themselves and so might have only few or more from the mentioned traits :)
@Shanky : I meant other clothes beside denim :). You can try for passing a law to marry machines/softwares, besides India is quite forward and liberal, it has already passed section 377 ;)
Nice post:
Here is more:
1.All of a sudden try to press the spacebar just thinking it will pause a LIVE performance !
2.Know your typing speed but not recognize own handwriting (which has been ruined because of lack of practice!)
3. Got 10 phone numbers to connect to the 4 members of the family
4. Chat with friends sitting next door using IM!
