@Nitin : you sound frustrated with linux, maybe some bad history with linux, anyways i m not judging you.
When you say linux isnt ready to dethrone windows, google has lot of flops, windows is the common man’s os; what i see here is kids fighting for what they like, and are in love with their choices.

We dont advocate or evangelize Linux, just love helping humanity and believe in competition rather than monopoly, as it is competition itself that helps us evolve faster. My evidence would be innovations coming out from opensource compared to ones from closed source.

I agree with your point that there is no common single authority/owner for linux(you do get support on payment though), whom we can go and blame if it dosen’t work, or get support for it spoonfeeded. It does take time to learn and when used for projects, you do need expertise. However we need to know what we are coding, what is it made up of; what we love is bringing the software apart, then studying, experimenting and customizing it to our own needs(which Microsoft prevents us to do so :( ). Better Software is created when you opensource the code and someone somewhere gets an idea and builts something upon it, thus evolution at a faster rate.

Yes, there are many distros for Linux and choices sometimes confuse people, as they usually want easier way out by just being given one in form of prepackaging in hardware. Also, in human psycology, free has bad notions, and people usually tend to buy costly stuff, as they then feel sense of security. All these things apart, windows does win for service based companies and non technical people because there is someone to take responsibility if something goes wrong, which is not the case with linux/gnu where if it fails then you need to figure out yourself or google it.

So please dont fight that which is better as it totally matters on your goals. We are just here to spread awareness, we dont get anything out of it other than good feeling of helping thy neighbour and making world a better technical place which is only possible if you share the knowledge. And thanks to Shanky/Priks/Priyesh for sharing it with me in college days, as i otherwise would have been an ignorant and slave to a single company.

PS : Philosophy apart, Linux is not perfect(neither is Windows as a matter of fact), so instead of wasting time on useless debates, help yourself or help the community(which inturn will help you), and flame wars like these hardly helps anyone, as i saw no new creative learning in this. The only reason I write this(and my last) is to tell fellow mates(that also includes you) to help those who need it rather than preaching.

@Shanky : i did learn new things from your comments though as they did have evidence and explanation. Its better way to justify, good i will also use that in future.

btw i dont know about you , but in banglore i have met tons of artists who have used open source apps in their graphics pipeline ,,btw there is a reason why it’s called graphcis pipeline ,,because not one app can do all , and not every app runs good on every OS :) hence the composite solution

@ Shanky – Why talk about something you dont know at all? Backburner and Renderman are rendering apps, you don’t create anything in them, they are almost platform independent, and rely on the hardware, k?
@ Chiky – To your surprise I’ve used Yast in opensuse, it was good, but it didn’t mean that we won’t need to use command line. Because there is no website, where you could go and check for security patches. I’m glad you agree with Harsh at least, but people lose their patience when things don’t work as they should, and the solution is locked up in linux forums.
@ Harsh – Well, when you read everyone else’s comment on this page, you’d know whose advocating what. I admit windows isn’t a great OS, but it works for me, and most people, what we need is a Big Corp to make an OS that’s not free (linux – so they can support it) or costly (mac) so people can afford it, to break the Windows’ winning streak and unruly monopoly.

@Nitin: once again “how many times should i say i know what backburner mananger and render man do” ,, i F**king know what render farms are ,,and f**king know what app is used for what because i had the pleasure of working with some artists and deploying some of aforementioned softwares ,so stop your personal comment like “Why talk about something you dont know at all? ” , and be little more constructive and just cite example of when you helped a FREE software instead of fighting and telling everyne how BAD they were , and we will be COOL :) .. cause actions speak louder than words and as for me in case you wanna know ..i contribute to open source .so does everyone else in this list in one way or other[NOT necessarily by coding] …
BTW Linux is backed by corporations

can you elaborate more on the point where you come up with only costly comps. are affordable by general masses,
in case you don’t Apple’s Mac os uses most of the things from open source
they used BSD kernel [MIT licensed , so need to contribute back]
safari , drawer , etc etc [ is based on webkit a khtnml fork from , gpl licensed]
CUPs as printer deamon [ well cups is gpl's]
etc ..
