Songbird Download Link http://getsongbird.com/

well around approximately 10 months ago i had reviewed a media player named Songbird which had promised to be “Firefox of Media players ” .. well this time around i will take you on a visual journey through installation to actual use of this media player and let you decide what changes / coding – love has this player received .

somethings that caught my attention immediately [with respect to edition 0.7 Beta]

  • It now has quite comprehensive Last.Fm integration
  • It’s really more stable
  • UI / feathers [or Skins] really needs more coding love
  • it’s embedded Web browser even supports Flash content
  • It’s flexibility/extensibility has increased by manifolds since last review :)
  • it takes lot of time to change Skins/Feathers and meanwhile the screen remains devoid of any visual traces of song bird .. :)
  • On Linux it didn’t play nice with my compiz fusion .
  • Installation was quite easy on linux [point and click] with obvious step of untaring the tar.gz file
  • Suddenly it started consuming 95 % CPU on my Ubuntu [Linux ]
  • No video support and any attempt to play it hanged Songbird , but it’s understandable as it’s reason is given here on their blog. [but i am not really sure if it appies to 0.7 beta too]

Screenshoots are from Windows Xp and Ubuntu Linux

  1. Thats a cooll media player I must say.I just downloaded it and the installation is such easy and interface is cool
The search process is a bit slow(a lot slow I must say). Also the cover flow is not showing up coverimages I think it nedds some configuration
overall the sound quality is also good :)

  2. @amol : cover flow is bit sluggish .. but do remeber it’s beta version so wait for it’s final release

  3. actually cover flow is also sluggish in the iTunes.. If looked at it closer, iTunes cover flow breaks its flow here and there while scrolling fast.

  4. I really liked those themes and the way we can easly switch between them. The sound quality is better than amarok(with Gstreamer). But the cover fetcher button is still not working.
I also am impressed the way its web browser works.

  5. Songbird 1.0.0 released today, better than ever.
