For those who are using Mac osX, I think Adium would be a one of the few application that would be there in their macbook/imac since they have bought the system. For me its a lifesaver and a way to avoid the annoying facebook chat screen. Also it provide me option to save all facebook chats which is not available in originial facebook chat (or I am not aware of it ) Though recently i have been facing a lot of problem using Adium for facebook chat such as sudden logout of the chat and most recent problem in which it wont load the facebook buddy list. Intially I was a bit lazy to find the solution and thought its just a temporary problem and it will be resolved soon. But after a month i finally looked for its solution and it was not so difficult to find. but still if anyone is still facing the problem here is the solution. When adding facebook account in Adium, instead of adding it through facebook default manager, add it through Jabber. Yup its one one of easiest solution to implement. Its also available at Facebook Help. anyways here are the standard procedure:
Adium
- Go to the Adium menu and select “Preferences.”
- From the “Accounts” tab, click the “+” and select “Jabber” from the drop-down menu. Fill in the following information:
• Jabber ID: your Facebook username@chat.facebook.com
• Password: your Facebook password
here are also steps to add facebook chat support to iChat and Pidgin:
iChat
- Go to the iChat menu and select “Preferences.”
- From the “Accounts” tab, click the “+” and select the following settings:
• Account Type: Jabber
• Account Name: your Facebook username@chat.facebook.com
• Password: your Facebook password - Click down to server options and select the following settings:
• Server: chat.facebook.com
• Port: 5222
• Uncheck “Use SSL”
Pigdin
- Go to “Accounts” and select “Manage Account.”
- Create a new account with the following settings:Under Basic:
Protocol: XMPP
Username: your Facebook username
Domain: “chat.facebook.com”
Resource: “pidgin”
Password: your facebook password
Local alias: “Facebook Chat”Under Advanced:
Uncheck Require SSL/TLS
Connect port: 5222
Connect server: chat.facebook.com
I will also add the screenshot later.
P.S. Adium supports more than 15 chat services such as AIM, MSN, Jabber, Yahoo, ICQ, Facebook, Twitter, Irc and etc. Though for me its mainly concerns with Facebook and ICQ.

Didn’t know pidgin supports facebook chat.. :p
And well, welcome back and keep writing now.
before facebook chat support xmpp , we had http://code.google.com/p/pidgin-facebookchat/
Cannot login to Jabber via Adium. Im using my FB-login details without luck.
My username for FB is myname@hotmail.com but you advice to use:
“your Facebook username@chat.facebook.com” – that would mean:
myname@hotmail.com@chat.facebook.com, which doesnt work… please advice what to use as username.. .not regged into Jabber, but i believe you only need your fbdetails… weird.
To Sinos, you your facebook username (not email) if you have not set one or do not know what it is go to facebook>account>account settings> second down you will see “username”
add that to @chat.facebook.com in adium and insert your facebook password, press okay and you should be good to go.
Excellent! I figured it was a bug with Adium and ignored it for a while now. You’ve made my day. Thanks!
Thank you SO MUCH. I had all but given up on being able to use Adium with Facebook chat since the “built in support” doesn’t really work. This made my day! (and I’ve been having a good day)
Sinos,I was unable to comment before, But I believe conorton reply has answered your query. I will make sure i keep myself updated now onwards w.r.t to posts and comments. In case if there is still any confusion, let me know.
I’ve tried to follow the advice given here, and I am techno-savy, but I have been unable to get it working in Adium. username@chat.facebook.com with normal facebook password. Port is 5222 and SSL options are disabled. It just asks me for my password over and over, failing authentication every time. Can anyone help?
@Emanuel: make sure while adding account you are selecting Jabber account and then follow the instruction again. if you select Add Account > Facebook, then it wont work. let me know if you still have any issues.
Thanks for getting back to me so soon, but I was quite sure to use Jabber rather than Adium’s Facebook conduit. Any other suggestions? Thanks again, – Emanuel
Emmanuel,
I have the EXACT same problem. I was quite sure to use jabber and I followed the directions here to the T. All I get is a prompt to type in my password over and over. Can anybody please help? thanks in advance
When emailing customer service I got a personal response from Robbie Vehse:
“customer!
Tsk, you never paid for Adium.
-Robbie”
I say don’t use it on principle!
